Sweet Sorrow
“Regret” is a story of family relations among different generations. The principal engine of the narrative is the main character’s, sixteen-year-old Relja’s, heartthrob. In order to get the girl he wants, his peer Ana, he is ready to do anything. The story starts with his grandmother passing. His mother Olga has no intention of organizing the funeral due to the troubled relationship she had with her recently deceased mother. However, Relja realizes that Ana’s reacting emotionally to his family loss, so he decides to organize the funeral, even though it’s against Olga’s wishes. Trying to hide his actions, he goes further and further in his attempts to manoeuvre between controlling Ana’s love life and organizing the funeral. This makes his moral boundaries, as well as his empathy toward the people around him, questionable.
