Near / Far

David’s new life in the middle of nowhere was meant to be the cure for all his problems. However, he also brought along his 14-year-old son Matěj, who despises this sojourn in the heart of nature and would do anything to go back home. One day Matěj arrives at an extreme solution – he attempts suicide. David manages to save him, but he’s left with no choice: he has to leave the safety of his refuge in the wilderness. However, their return to civilization doesn’t mean an end to their problems. We slowly realize why David had to leave the city in the first place – it was the only way he could cope with his crippling alcoholism, and now his endless battle with temptation starts anew. As for Matěj, he desperately struggles to fit in at his new school, but instead of accepting him, his peers begin bullying him. It takes them both a long time to realize that they can’t solve their problems if they don’t open up, and that in order to understand one another, they must first understand themselves.
