On April 7, 1944, Alfred Wetzler accomplished some- thing inconceivable – along with his younger fellow pris- oner Val Rosenberg he escaped from the highly-guard- ed camp of death Auschwitz-Birkenau. Following an exhausting and perilous journey, the escapees reached Slovakia, where, thanks to Wetzler’s photo- graphic memory, they compiled a report about the genocide of the ‘inferior races’, featuring a rst-hand account of the industrial murdering, a list of victims and a detailed plan of the camp. The report nally reached W. Churchill and F. D. Roosevelt and in u- enced the course of the Second World War. Freddy Wetzler arrived at Auschwitz when he was 24 years old, Val Rosenberg was 18 and Wetzler’s future wife, Eta Hammer, was only 16 - they were mere children. Our lm describes the courage of these young people and is directed rst and foremost at a young audience.
